The project, implemented to enhance border control, security, and the prevention of communicable diseases at the Maldives’ main ports of entry. It has upgraded airport infrastructure and capabilities, including the installation of advanced biometric control systems and improved identification document checking.
The initiative also provided training and resources to bolster border security, health preparedness, and sanitation measures. In addition, the project improved waste management practices, environmental safety standards, and emergency response capacities in line with international health regulations.
Equipment and machinery donated by the Japanese government will support the screening of travellers and strengthen overall border security. As the country’s primary gateways for tourists and residents, VIA and Gan International Airport are now better equipped to manage visitor flows while safeguarding public health and national security.
