Jumhooree Party (JP) has made a significant decision regarding its stance in the upcoming second round of the presidential election not to endorse any candidate in the second round.
Following the party’s notable victory, securing 5,460 votes in the first round of the election held on the 9th of this month, JP convened a crucial council meeting to deliberate its course of action.
The council meeting, held at the party headquarters in Kunooz, commenced today at 1 p.m. and concluded with the party’s resolution.
The deliberations extended over approximately two hours as council members engaged in a thorough discussion on whether JP should align itself with a candidate for the next phase of the election.
After council members had the opportunity to express their respective views, a majority of 68 council members voted in favor of abstaining from endorsing any specific candidate. However, specific details regarding the vote remain undisclosed at this time.
It is worth noting that the Progressive Party of Maldives – People’s National Congress (PPM-PNC) and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have also explored the possibility of forming a coalition with the Jumhooree Party (JP).
Earlier attempts to hold a council meeting for deliberations on potential alliances with these two parties were made by the JP on Wednesday. However, the meeting was called off following a request from President Solih to meet with JP leader Gasim Ibrahim.
