JSC Appoints Ibrahim Mahir to the High Court

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Ibrahim Mahir, the Chief Judge of the Family Court, to the High Court.
According to the commission, a total of 14 individuals applied for the vacant posts. Mahir, who has 18 years of experience in the judiciary, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jurisprudence and Law from the University of Qatar and a Master’s degree in Sharia from Villa College. He began his judicial career as a Civil Court judge in November 2005 and later joined the Family Court in January 2010. He was formally appointed Chief Judge of the Family Court in October 2022.
Mahir took his oath of office at a ceremony held on Thursday.
The appointment followed controversy surrounding the earlier nomination of Mohamed Shaheed, a senior political activist and former deputy minister, whose candidacy drew sharp criticism from legal professionals and members of the public over concerns about judicial independence. Shaheed withdrew his nomination last month prior to the scheduled oath-taking ceremony.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Naushad, a senior lawyer at the Prosecutor General’s Office and one of the unsuccessful applicants, filed a case at the Civil Court over the JSC’s decision to
