The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced that nominations are now open for the positions of Chief Justice of the High Court and Chief Justice of the Family Court.

According to the JSC, the vacancies arise following recent changes within the judiciary. The High Court position became vacant after Justice Hussain Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court. Although the Commission had previously decided to appoint Justice Mohamed Faisal to the role, he was not formally instated. Justice Faisal subsequently resigned following allegations of corruption.

At present, the High Court consists of 11 judges, with Justice Abdullah Jameel Moosa serving in an acting capacity as head of the court.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice position at the Family Court became vacant after Ibrahim Mahir was appointed as a judge of the High Court. The Family Court currently has a bench of seven judges.

The deadline for submitting applications for both positions is 12:00 am on 31 March 2026.
