President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Hussain Riza Adam,, has tendered his resignation from the commission. He confirmed the resignation to local media, though he did not provide a reason for the decision.
Riza, who represents the People’s Majlis on the JSC as the MP for Maafushi, was appointed President of the commission in June last year. His departure comes on the same day a planned ceremony to appoint judges to the Criminal Court and several Magistrate Courts was scheduled to take place. The event was later cancelled without explanation.
In recent weeks, Riza had been outspoken about structural challenges in the judiciary. He remarked that while salary frameworks for implementing bodies are comparatively favourable, the judiciary becomes a “powerless force” when placed alongside them.
