Kelaa Sets Rainfall Record with 231.5 Millimetres Amidst Widespread Storms

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has reported that HA. Kelaa, a northern island in the Maldives, recorded a record 231.5 millimetres of rainfall yesterday, following several days of widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country.

In a weather update released today, the MMS indicated that the adverse weather conditions were caused by an active Southwest Monsoon, locally known as the Hulhuangu Monsoon. The Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in Kelaa measured a daily rainfall of 231.5 millimetres, marking the highest amount recorded to date.

Other rainfall figures included 177.5 millimetres at HDh. Hanimaadhoo, 102 millimetres at R. Irufu, 77.8 millimetres at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, and 69.6 millimetres at K. Kaashidhoo. Additionally, the AWS in F. Nilandhoo recorded maximum wind gusts of 45 miles per hour.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a precautionary advisory urging the public to take measures to protect property and belongings.

The MMS predicts that the current weather conditions, characterised by widespread rain and thunderstorms, will continue over the next five days. Average wind speeds are expected to range from 17-27 miles per hour in northern and central regions, and 13-23 miles per hour in the south, with gusts potentially reaching 60 miles per hour. 

Seas are anticipated to be rough, with conditions worsening during showers, and there is a possibility of swell wave surges during high tide. The agency has warned all seafarers to exercise caution and adhere to safety precautions.
