Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shiyam, who is accompanying President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on a three-day tour of nine islands in Huvadhu Atoll, emphasised the administration’s commitment to delivering on promises made to local fishermen.

The Minister noted that fishermen are now receiving payments for their catch within 48 hours of selling to the State-owned fisheries company, a pledge fulfilled by President Muizzu since taking office. He also highlighted the administration’s efforts to address the concerns of fishermen and implement solutions to support the fishing community.

Huvadhu Atoll, recognised for its significant fishing community, has been a focal point for large-scale development plans under this administration, according to Minister Shiyam. He stressed that the project to enhance the capacity of Kooddoo is crucial, as the atoll’s islands rely heavily on its facilities.

The USD 6.6 million project, expected to be completed within a year, aims to increase cold storage capacity by 4,000 tonnes and enhance Kooddoo’s power infrastructure. Once completed, the facility’s total capacity will rise from 2,000 tonnes to 6,000 metric tonnes, with further expansions planned.

Currently, the Maldives’ total cold storage capacity stands at 8,500 tonnes. President Muizzu has pledged to triple this capacity during his term in office.

The expansion is anticipated to improve fish pricing in the Maldives, as 65 per cent of the country’s catch is presently exported raw due to limited storage facilities. The increased capacity is expected to strengthen the fisheries industry and bolster the livelihoods of local fishermen.
