President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday evening that the land reclamation projects in Hulhumalé Phase III, Giraavarulhu, and North Thilafalhu have been awarded to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Speaking to residents in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll, during his ongoing tour, President Muizzu said MACL has signed agreements with two foreign companies operating dredgers to carry out the reclamation work. Three dredgers are expected to arrive in the coming months: one with an 11-tonne capacity and two with 45-tonne capacity.

He added that a second company will handle land reclamation in the Malé region, with dredgers scheduled to be brought to the country by November.

President Muizzu noted that land reclamation in these areas had been halted for several months. The plots had been allocated to residents of Malé under the Landlord Scheme implemented by the previous administration. However, the government has not yet confirmed that the Malé region projects have officially been handed over to MACL.

While MACL is overseeing the dredging work, the company recently established Peninsular Infrastructure Private Limited to carry out the projects. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade’s business registry, MACL is listed as a shareholder, and the company’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, also serves as CEO and Managing Director of the newly formed company.
