Male’ City Council Mayor, Mohamed Muizzu, expressed firm loyalty towards former President Abdullah Yameen, stating that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) have provided unconditional support to him. Yameen has been granted the presidential ticket, as confirmed by Muizzu in a recent statement.
In the event that Yameen is unable to participate in the presidential election due to his current conviction, the PPM has not yet finalised a replacement candidate. Nonetheless, there have been speculations suggesting that some senior party leaders, including Muizzu, have displayed interest in the candidacy and have been informally vying for the ticket.
Muizzu emphasised that Yameen’s imprisonment is a direct consequence of the responsibility entrusted to him by the entire party through the presidential ticket. Consequently, he believes that the entire party should continue to stand by Yameen during his 1,000-day jail term.
“We are obliged to extend our unwavering support to President Yameen, the candidate we have nominated for the presidency. None of us should engage in any actions that may obstruct, challenge, or cast doubt upon this decision,” Muizzu stated.
He made it clear that he would condemn any such actions, regardless of whether they originated from within or outside the party, or from individuals close to him.
Muizzu revealed his longstanding admiration for Yameen, indicating that he supported him even during his tenure with the Adhalath Party. He firmly believed that Yameen was the most capable leader to serve the country’s interests.
Recalling Yameen’s guidance and assistance in the political arena, Muizzu expressed his desire to stand by the former president, even after his defeat in the 2018 elections. Subsequently, he joined the PPM following Yameen’s recommendation, a decision driven by respect and support for the ex-president.
