LRA Investigates Rights Violations Following Protest by Foreign Workers in Male’
The Labour Relations Authority (LRA) has launched an investigation into potential breaches of rights after a group of foreign workers staged a protest in Malé over unpaid wages.
Around 55 workers gathered near the Muliaage area before being detained by police and handed over to the Department of Immigration.
Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, Controller General of Immigration, confirmed on X that action would be pursued under the Immigration Act once the investigation is complete.
“Police have handed over 55 foreigners who protested in the green zone. The Labour Relations Authority is working at the Immigration Detention Centre as the foreigners claim their rights have been violated. No person living in the Maldives under a permit issued by Immigration shall be allowed to violate the laws and regulations of the Maldives,” Shamaan stated.
Reports indicate that of those detained, 38 are Indian nationals, and 17 are Bangladeshi nationals. It remains unclear which company employed the workers. Further details about the case have yet to emerge.
