LRA Receives Over 30 Complaints Over Unpaid Ramadan Allowance

The Labour Relations Authority (LRA) has reported receiving complaints from 33 individuals regarding the non-issuance of the Ramadan Allowance.

Under Article 51(a) of the Employment Act, all Maldivian employees are entitled to a minimum Ramadan Allowance of MVR 3,000, which must be paid before the beginning of Ramadan. The LRA had previously invited employees to submit complaints if they had not received the allowance.

The Ministry of Finance has outlined that employees on unpaid leave and scholarship recipients on paid leave will not be eligible for the allowance. However, those returning to work during Ramadan will receive a proportionate amount based on the period from their return until the end of Ramadan.

The LRA has affirmed that all civil servants and private-sector employees, including temporary workers and those on legally stipulated leave, are entitled to the Ramadan Allowance.
