Maldives Airports Company Limited has commenced operational flow familiarisation training for the seaplane check-in counters at the newly inaugurated Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport, as part of preparations to bring the counters into full operation.

The company said the trial was conducted to assess and validate end-to-end passenger handling and operational workflows at the seaplane counters. Two airline operators, Flyme and Maldivian, participated in the training exercise.

As the Maldives hosts the largest seaplane operation in the world, Terminal 1 has been equipped with 24-hour dedicated check-in counters for seaplane passengers. A total of 33 airlines are currently operating from the new passenger terminal, which was officially inaugurated on 26 July this year.

Covering an area of 72,000 square metres, Terminal 1 is designed to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually and is considered a major development for the country’s tourism sector. The terminal features 12 passenger boarding bridges, 47 conventional check-in counters, six self-check-in kiosks, and an advanced baggage handling system with real-time tracking capabilities.
