The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has extended invitations to all former Presidents of the Maldives to attend the inauguration of the new international passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The terminal is set to open on 26 July, aligning with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. Final preparations are currently ongoing ahead of the official opening, with MACL confirming that formal invitations to the former leaders will be dispatched in the coming days.
Velana International Airport was first opened in 1960 during the presidency of Ibrahim Nasir. Since then, the airport has seen extensive development under successive governments, reflecting its importance as the country’s main international gateway.
Construction of the new terminal began nine years ago, but the project experienced multiple delays. At the time the current administration assumed office, only 54 percent of the work had been completed. The progress was largely limited to structural concrete works and the external facade, while key areas such as the duty-free commercial zone, much of the interior, and the terminal’s access road had not yet been contracted.
Completion of the new terminal has been a key priority for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu since he took office. His administration regards the project as essential for economic growth, given the significance of the tourism and transport sectors to the national economy. Within 18 months of taking office, the administration has completed the project, which is now ready for inauguration.
