Noonu Magoodhoo has concluded the Budu Fothi reusable nappy programme, a collaboration between Soneva Namoona, Magoodhoo Council, the Magoodhoo Women’s Development Committee, and the Magoodhoo Health Centre, which ran from August to December 2024 to reduce nappy waste and promote sustainable parenting.
The four-month trial saw 33 children from 31 families provided with cloth nappy kits, along with educational materials and access to a community support group. The programme was designed to assess the economic, environmental, and social benefits of using cloth nappies, while encouraging families to make sustainable choices.
At a celebration held on 31 January 2025, local families, stakeholders, and community leaders gathered to recognise the impact of the programme. The event featured an official ceremony, sustainability-themed activities, and opportunities for families to share their experiences with the initiative.
Notable Achievements of the Programme Include:
- 60% of participating children adopted cloth nappies, with many families using them alongside disposable nappies.
- Four parents fully transitioned to cloth nappies, including one who had already been using them prior to the programme.
- Parents reported significant financial savings and noted quicker potty training as a result of using cloth nappies.
- Over 80% of parents involved in the programme indicated they would recommend cloth nappies to other families.
- Local shop Four S Traders has been appointed as an official agent for cloth nappies, ensuring continued access to sustainable options within the community.
The programme’s success highlights the growing interest in sustainable parenting practices and serves as a model for similar initiatives in other communities.
As part of this project they also produced a four-part video drama series with the community of Magoodhoo to engage on this issue.
