A candidate representing the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) party in the upcoming Majlis election has triggered public backlash following comments made regarding women’s reproductive health and societal roles.
Ibrahim Mohamed, vying for the North Mahchangolhi constituency, shared a video on TikTok purporting to convey “an important message for young women,” back in 2022. In the video, Mohamed asserted that a woman’s fertility and childbearing capabilities outweigh any academic qualifications or professional pursuits.
“The most precious asset as a woman is that period when your womb is healthy. It’s about 10 years.”
Mohamed suggested that beyond this period, women’s physical appearances deteriorate due to aging and hormonal changes. He further contended that this natural process does not accommodate personal ambitions or career aspirations.
“It’s true, you have a choice in this age, you have the choice to choose your own career and do whatever work you desire but you have to think about capitalising on that asset during its most valuable time”
“I’m talking about building a family. Strong husbands don’t care about the women’s certificate or the job title, but about a healthy womb that can bear children.”
His comments were met with backlash on social media, with some suggesting that women from the North Mahchangolhi constituency should not vote for him.
Ibrahim Mohamed is the brother of Sheikh Abdullla Bin Mohamed, the president of ultra-conservative NGO Jamiyyathul Salaf. He is also a brother-in-law of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
