A major land reclamation project in Gaadhiffushi is now underway, with the government stating that the initiative will address long-standing land scarcity on the island.
The dredging operation is being carried out by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and forms part of a pledge made by President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to the island in September last year.
According to details shared by the President on social media, the project will reclaim around 11 hectares of new land at a cost of USD 7.2 million and is expected to be completed within 10 days. A total of 396,000 cubic metres of sand will be used in the reclamation work.
The project also includes coastal protection measures, with the installation of a 100-metre rock breakwater, a 704-metre rock revetment and a 100-metre groyne to protect both the newly reclaimed land and the existing shoreline from erosion.
The government has stated that the development will provide a long-term solution to land shortages in Gaadhiffushi and is expected to create new opportunities for housing and economic expansion.
During his visit, the President also reviewed progress on several other development projects on the island, including efforts to expedite the construction of a health centre extension and a fitness and recreation centre.
He further noted that a new island council building will be developed with assistance from the Chinese government, as part of broader efforts to upgrade local infrastructure and public services.
