The discussions took place yesterday during a meeting between Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef and a high-level delegation from China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate, which is currently visiting the Maldives at his invitation.
The Chinese delegation is led by Shi Weizhong, a Permanent Member of the Procuratorial Committee of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, who holds a rank equivalent to that of a Vice Minister. The meeting, held at Hotel Jen, was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, and senior officials from both countries.
During the meeting, both sides explored areas of cooperation, including staff training, infrastructure development, and knowledge exchange. The Prosecutor General’s Office briefed the delegation on its ongoing initiatives, such as the integration of Artificial Intelligence into its case management system, the development of a filing system, and current infrastructure challenges.
Further discussions focused on strengthening the capacity of the Maldives’ prosecution service in handling financial crime investigations, including cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering. China expressed willingness to provide technical assistance and specialised training in these areas.
The visit marks the first official trip by senior officials of China’s Public Prosecution Agency to the Maldives, representing a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation between the two countries’ legal and judicial institutions.
As part of their visit, the delegation also met Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohammed, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihsan, and Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen. The Chinese officials also toured the premises of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
