Maldives and China signed a letter of exchange to conduct a feasibility study for a 100-bed hospital project in suburban Vilimale’.

The agreement was signed by Maldivian Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib and Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin during a ceremony at Dharumavantha Hospital.

The initiative to build a tertiary hospital in Vilimale’ was first announced by Maldivian Health Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel on December 27. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu later confirmed in January that the Chinese government had offered grant assistance for the project.

He conveyed this development via a video message during a state visit to Beijing, where he highlighted China’s commitment to fully fund the hospital’s construction.

In March, President Muizzu announced that land had been allocated in Vilimale’ for the hospital, and that physical construction would commence once the technical preparations were completed.

Muizzu has prioritised improving access to healthcare throughout his administration. He emphasised that the new hospital in Vilimale’ would significantly reduce the need for local residents to travel to Male’ City for medical services, thus enhancing healthcare accessibility for the community.
