The Maldivian government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Machinery Engineering Cooperation (CMEC) to establish a fisheries and maritime logistics hub in Addu City, the country’s southernmost region.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Ministry of Fisheries stated that the project would provide modern facilities and logistics services required for the growth of the fisheries sector in the south. It highlighted Addu City as a strategic location for fisheries development and said the initiative would enhance income-generating opportunities for fishermen in the region.

Under the MoU, both parties agreed to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the project, assess its financial and economic viability, design a business model for operations, and explore financing arrangements.

The initiative comes as the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) advances plans to directly export fish from Addu City. In August, the state-owned company announced its intention to begin exports within a month and confirmed ongoing efforts to add value to fish processed in Addu during this year.

MIFCO has also recently started purchasing fish from Fuvahmulah City, another southern hub, as part of its expansion in the region’s fisheries sector.
