Maldives and China Sign MVR 1.32 Billion Agreement for Villimalé Hospital, Road and Council Buildings

The Governments of the Republic of Maldives and the People’s Republic of China signed an Agreement on Development Cooperation today, covering key projects including the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital in Villimalé, the Malé–Villimalé road development, and the construction of 50 council buildings across the Maldives.

At a ceremony this morning, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, signed on behalf of the Maldives, while Kong Xianhua, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, signed for China. The Agreement provides an assistance package of RMB 600 million (approximately MVR 1.32 billion) to support the country’s developmental priorities in the coming years.

According to the ministry, speaking at the event, Minister Khaleel described the Agreement as a reflection of the close friendship and strong cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted China’s transformative role in the Maldives’ development, citing contributions to Hulhumalé housing, the health sector, tourism growth, and the iconic China–Maldives Friendship Bridge. He added that the assistance under the Agreement will focus on the hospital in Villimalé, the Malé–Villimalé road, and council buildings across the country.

Minister Khaleel also conveyed appreciation to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and the people of China for their continued support and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to deepening bilateral ties to build a joint community with a shared future.

Ambassador Kong emphasised China’s ongoing support for the Maldives’ development and reiterated Beijing’s commitment to strengthening cooperation through the effective implementation of agreed projects for the prosperity of both nations.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other distinguished guests.
