Maldives and India engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing their existing defense cooperation.
The talks transpired during a meeting between Maldives’ Chief of Defense Force, Lieutenant General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, and the Ambassador of India to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar.
Indian High Commission’s Defense Advisor, Capital Deepak Bali, was also present at the meeting, underscoring the significance both nations attribute to bolstering their defense ties.
Chief of Defense Force Abdul Raheem disclosed that the meeting involved a comprehensive review of ongoing defense cooperation activities. Additionally, participants delved into considerations for advancing military-to-military engagements between the two nations.
The discussions mark a continuation of diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties between Maldives and India. Notably, the former Maldivian administration faced scrutiny for its military relations with India during its tenure, with the then-opposition raising concerns about undisclosed defense agreements.
The current administration, which was formerly in the opposition, had accused the previous government of entering into various defense pacts with India without proper transparency. The recent meeting signifies a commitment to transparent and cooperative diplomatic relations as both nations seek to navigate their defense cooperation into the future.
