The Maldives and India have engaged in discussions aimed at deepening collaboration in renewable energy.

The talks took place on 30 October 2025, in a meeting between Maldivian Deputy Minister for Tourism and Environment Hussain Ageel Naseer and Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi. The bilateral meeting was held on the sidelines of the 8th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly in New Delhi.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the discussions focused on promoting renewable energy, with both sides exploring ways to increase its use and initiate new projects. Ageel highlighted the vulnerability of the Maldives as a small island nation and described solar energy as key to enhancing the country’s energy resilience. Joshi assured India’s willingness to cooperate with the Maldives in strengthening its energy security.

Both officials agreed that collaboration in renewable energy is vital for environmental protection and for developing sustainable solutions to meet the energy needs of both countries.

At the COP28 summit in Dubai in 2023, Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged to meet 33 percent of the Maldives’ energy requirements from renewable sources by 2028, describing the investment as a crucial commitment for the future of the low-lying nation. In May 2025, the Maldives also signed the Blue Planet Climate Agreement, committing to an aspirational goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.
