The Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, has met with Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori to advance discussions on a solar PV and NAS battery storage desalination plant in the Maldives.

The project, supported by the Government of Japan, aims to provide sustainable water solutions by integrating renewable energy into the country’s infrastructure.

Minister Thoriq highlighted the joint commitment of both nations to accelerate the project’s implementation, emphasising its potential to improve the Maldives’ water security while fostering environmentally sustainable energy. He expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, noting that the collaboration not only advances the Maldives’ renewable goals but also strengthens the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Ambassador Takeuchi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and collaborative development, underscoring the value of continued partnerships on similar projects in the future.

This new project complements ongoing renewable energy initiatives in the Maldives, such as the contract awarded earlier this year to the Chinese company Sino Soar Hybrid Technology Company Limited. Valued at USD 1.2 million, this project involves installing energy management systems for solar PV systems on 20 islands, with completion expected within four months.

The Maldivian government has set a target of generating 33% of its electricity from renewable sources within the next five years. Currently, approximately 67.5 MW of solar power is installed across the nation, contributing about 6% to its overall electricity supply.
