The Maldives has initiated discussions with Kuwait to enhance collaboration in religious affairs and Islamic education, as part of an official visit by the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel.

During his visit, Dr Khaleel met with Kuwait’s Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Mohammed Al Wasmi. The meeting focused on identifying areas for cooperation in promoting religious education and strengthening institutional ties in Islamic affairs.

The visit follows an invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, and includes a series of high-level engagements aimed at deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Dr Khaleel also held talks with Kuwait’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister of the State, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Al-Saud Al-Sabah. Discussions centred on expanding cooperation across key sectors and exploring new opportunities for partnership.

Marking 48 years of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Kuwait, the Foreign Ministers of both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening ties in areas such as tourism, trade and investment, renewable energy, health, aviation, and people-to-people exchanges.

As part of his official programme, Dr Khaleel also met with Dr Noura Suleiman Salem Al-Fassam, Kuwait’s Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Investment. During the meeting, he briefed her on the Maldives’ current fiscal situation and outlined the country’s positive economic trajectory.

Kuwait has long served as a key development partner for the Maldives. Through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Kuwait has contributed to several major infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Velana International Airport and the Small Island Hospital Development Project, the latter supported through a loan facility granted in 2024.
