The Maldives and Thailand have formalised a wide-ranging agreement to strengthen sports relations, marking a significant step forward in bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement was signed on 27 November at the Ministry of Sports in Bangkok, setting out a framework for collaboration in athletic development, training, and sports infrastructure. It was signed by the Maldivian Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, and the Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports, Artthakorn Sirilatthayakorn. The ceremony was attended by Maldives Ambassador to Thailand Fuad Thowfeeg, along with senior officials from several Thai government agencies.

The new accord aims to enhance cooperation through the training and development of sports personnel across multiple disciplines. It outlines initiatives such as the exchange of athletes and coaching staff, the implementation of sports training and youth development programmes, and support for developing sports facilities in the Maldives.

Under the partnership, specialised assistance will be provided to the Maldives by key Thai institutions, including the Department of Physical Education, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the National Sports University.

During the ceremony, the Thai Minister highlighted the role of international sporting events in fostering regional unity and noted Thailand’s upcoming responsibility as host of the 33rd Sea Games and the 13th ASEAN Para Games.

Both governments expressed confidence that the agreement will help strengthen long-term friendship and cooperation between the people of the Maldives and Thailand.
