Maldives and USAID Discuss Enhanced Cooperation During Minister’s US Visit

The Maldives and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) engaged in discussions aimed at bolstering their cooperation. 

These talks took place as part of the ongoing visit of Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer to the United States.

Minister Zameer met with USAID Administrator Samantha Power in Washington as part of his itinerary. According to the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions were described as productive, focusing on ways to strengthen their existing collaboration.

Minister Zameer expressed appreciation for the continued support provided by USAID. The meeting also delved into future joint initiatives between the Maldives and USAID.

During his stay in Washington, Minister Zameer is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss bilateral relations between the two nations.

Additionally, Minister Zameer is set to participate in an interactive session at the Council on Foreign Relations, an event aimed at fostering stronger ties between the Maldives and the United States. He also plans to engage with the Maldivian community in Washington D.C. to address community concerns and enhance relations.

Following his engagements in Washington, Minister Zameer will travel to New York City where he will meet with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua. These meetings are intended to strengthen the Maldives’ collaboration with the UN on various global and regional issues.

In New York, Minister Zameer will also meet with local tourism operators to promote tourism to the Maldives. Additionally, he aims to connect with Maldivian communities residing in New York and New Jersey to further strengthen community relations.

Minister Zameer’s official visit to the United States, beginning on June 24, underscores the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its partnership with the US and reaffirming its dedication to multilateralism. The visit includes high-level meetings with senior US government officials and key figures at the United Nations. Minister Zameer is scheduled to conclude his trip on June 27.

Accompanying Minister Zameer on his official visit are Secretary for Bilateral Affairs Dr. Hala Hameed and Senior Undersecretary Hassan Hussain Shihab.
