Maldives Begins Distribution of Zakat al-Mal to Those in Need
The government has commenced the distribution of Zakat al-Mal to individuals registered on the local poverty list.
The Islamic Ministry announced that this year’s distribution marks the highest per capita allocation of Zakat al-Mal for the poor and needy.
A total of 3,183 people from Malé and the atolls will benefit from this year’s Zakat. In previous years, the amount distributed was MVR 3,500 in 2023, MVR 3,000 in 2022, and MVR 2,700 in 2021.
The Islamic Ministry stated that the Zakat funds are being deposited directly into the accounts of eligible beneficiaries, following a review of the poverty list dating from 2021 to the present.
In addition to Zakat al-Mal, the Zakat Fund has disbursed MVR 16.78 million for medical treatment this year, according to the ministry.
Zakat al-Mal is a religious obligation in Islam, requiring Muslim men and women who meet a certain wealth threshold to contribute annually.
