The Maldives and China have signed an implementation agreement for the development of the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimalé.

Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced the signing today, describing it as a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation. He said the hospital project is a presidential commitment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
According to the government, the 112-bed hospital will be developed with full grant assistance from the Chinese government. The ministry said a feasibility study for the project has already been completed, and the signing of the implementation agreement formally initiates the detailed design phase.

The development of the hospital was first announced in January last year during President Muizzu’s state visit to China, where the Chinese government committed to fully funding the construction of a tertiary-level hospital in Vilimalé.
In March this year, the government announced that land had been allocated for the project in Vilimalé, with construction expected to commence once technical preparations are finalised. This was followed by the signing of a Letter of Exchange in May to facilitate the feasibility study.
