Maldives Condemns Israel For Breaching International Law at ICJ

MV+ News Desk | February 27, 2024

In a recent address to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Aishath Shan Shakir, the Maldivian Ambassador to Germany, condemned Israel for what she described as a significant violation of international law. She emphasized that supporting the Palestinian quest for independence and sovereignty has been a fundamental aspect of Maldivian foreign policy for an extensive period.

During the ICJ’s public hearings on the legal ramifications of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, the Maldives reiterated its stance, seeking clarity before a non-binding legal opinion is issued. Ambassador Shakir stressed the urgency of addressing the dire humanitarian situation unfolding in Gaza and urged the court to deliver a verdict against the injustices endured by the Palestinian people.

Advocating for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, Shakir emphasized that this remains the only viable solution to the conflict.

Representing the Maldives at the ICJ, international lawyers Amy Sanders and Dr. Naomi Hart, of the Assex Court Chambers, presented arguments focusing on Israel’s control over water resources in Palestinian territories and its violation of the right to self-determination. Sanders highlighted Israel’s cessation of water supply to Palestine following attacks in October 2023.

The Maldives asserted that Israel’s policies towards Palestinians amount to apartheid, a view shared by several other nations. The Maldives had previously expressed support for Palestine in a written statement to the ICJ in 2023.

The Maldives Attorney General’s Office underscored the country’s commitment to humanitarian assistance for Palestinians and its advocacy for their freedom and sovereignty on an international platform. Participation in the ICJ proceedings was deemed crucial to solidify the Maldives’ position as a staunch advocate for Palestine.

Highlighting the significance of the Palestinian cause for the Muslim world, the Attorney General’s Office argued that the Maldives’ advocacy would enhance the confidence of other Muslim nations in its commitment to supporting Palestine’s rights.

The ICJ’s legal opinion, requested by the United Nations General Assembly, is expected to contribute to efforts aimed at assisting Palestine in achieving sovereignty.
