“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and the Government of Australia during this difficult time,” the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

It added that the Government and people of the Maldives stand in solidarity with Australia and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.

Al Jazeera reported that the mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney killed at least 15 people and wounded 40. A bystander, filmed tackling and disarming one of the assailants, has been hailed as a hero. Authorities said one of the attackers, a 50-year-old man, arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, while his 24-year-old son came to their attention in 2019, though there was no indication he posed a threat of violence. In response to the attack, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government is considering tougher gun laws. The nation, which introduced some of the world’s strictest gun regulations following a 1996 shooting in Port Arthur that killed 35 people, is now reviewing potential reforms in light of the latest tragedy.
