Maldives Correctional Service Denies Claims of Premature Prison Release
The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has refuted allegations that Hashim Abubakr, convicted of sexually assaulting a child in a position of trust, was released from prison before completing his sentence.
MCS clarified that Hashim, who was sentenced to 12 years, five months, and 18 days in November 2022, had been transferred to house arrest due to a medical condition. His sentence is scheduled to conclude on 8 May 2035.

In a statement yesterday, MCS explained that Hashim had been suffering from a hip condition requiring surgery unavailable in the Maldives. Based on medical advice, the Corrections Medical Board authorised his travel abroad for treatment on 5 August. Hashim returned to the Maldives on 16 September following the procedure.
“Hashim Abubakr has been placed under temporary house arrest to serve his sentence as he cannot be treated in jail due to his illness, as per the recommendation of his doctor,” the statement read.
The corrections authority also emphasised that Hashim is being monitored in compliance with established rules and regulations while under house arrest.
