The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has pledged to make life difficult for drug traffickers in the Maldives, declaring that illicit drug activity will no longer be tolerated in the country.
Speaking to state media PSM regarding a major police operation conducted last Thursday, Ihusan said that drug traffickers will need to abandon their illegal trade, with authorities prepared to pursue all possible legal measures to halt the activity.
He emphasised that the appeal is for those involved to take up alternative activities, warning that continued involvement in drug trafficking will result in intensified enforcement.
The Minister described the operation as the beginning of sustained efforts by the Police to eliminate drug trafficking in the Maldives. He added that operations will continue until such activity ceases entirely, assuring the public that law enforcement remains committed to the safety and protection of the country around the clock.
Police reported last Thursday that over 90 individuals had been arrested during the large-scale operation, which began at 5:30 am. The authorities confirmed that those apprehended were directly involved in illicit drug activities.
The operation, named ‘Operation Alimagu’, is being described by the Police as the largest multi-location anti-drug campaign in recent Maldivian history.
