The Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have held discussions in Abu Dhabi on environmental protection and the development of renewable energy in the Maldives.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera. Discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations and ongoing initiatives in the energy sector, with both parties identifying areas for potential cooperation and exploring ways to enhance collaboration.

The talks also addressed shared priorities in environmental protection and the promotion of renewable energy, with views exchanged on the possibility of implementing joint programmes. The Maldivian government is working to strengthen the nation’s energy sector while fostering an environmentally sustainable society.

As part of these efforts, the government aims to generate 33 per cent of the Maldives’ electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
