Maldives Formally Requests India to Set Date for Troop Withdrawal by March

The Maldives government has formally requested the Indian government to provide a specific date for the withdrawal of Indian troops from Maldives before the end of March, in line with a presidential commitment.

President Dr Mohmed Muizzu has personally addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the fulfilment of the promise to withdraw Indian troops from Maldives. A senior government official disclosed that discussions are underway between the Defense and Foreign Ministries of both nations, with a plea for a withdrawal date by the conclusion of March.

As per the latest government statistics, there are currently 88 Indian military personnel stationed in Maldives. The President’s Office revealed in a press conference that 10 meetings have taken place at various levels to address this matter.

Responding to inquiries from journalists regarding the withdrawal process, government spokesperson Nazim acknowledged the complexity of the situation but affirmed the government’s dedication to honouring Muizzu’s commitment.

He further emphasised the government’s belief that the withdrawal process should adhere to diplomatic principles, rules, and global norms, ensuring compliance with legal frameworks and upholding the shared values of the international community.
