The Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, has announced the development of a five-year master plan on tobacco control, supported by technical assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The initiative, aimed at establishing a tobacco-free society, follows directives issued by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Minister Nazim shared this development during a recent panel discussion titled Dhafara.

During his remarks, Minister Nazim confirmed that a team of WHO technical experts has arrived in the Maldives to assist local authorities in drafting the master plan. “Work on formulating the plans has already commenced,” he said.

While highlighting the role of WHO experts in the initiative, Minister Nazim emphasised the need for public participation. “Tobacco control is a public issue, and we will actively seek the input of the general public as part of this effort,” he stated.

The minister acknowledged that implementing such a programme would come with its challenges but asserted that the master plan would serve as a strategic approach to addressing these difficulties. “Tobacco control is not something a single agency can enforce alone. The new plan will involve the participation of all relevant institutions and will incorporate the views and contributions of the public,” he added.

Minister Nazim also highlighted the socio-economic benefits of reducing tobacco consumption. According to him, the financial savings on healthcare could be redirected to vital sectors such as education.
