Maldives has been officially approved as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following a vote at the agency’s 69th General Conference in Vienna, Austria.

The country submitted its application for membership in November last year, which received support from the majority of existing IAEA member states, resulting in its acceptance.

The Maldivian delegation to the conference was led by Dr Salma Rasheed, the country’s Permanent Representative to Geneva. She highlighted the challenges faced by small island developing states and stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing scientific and technological issues.

Dr Salma described Maldives’ membership in the IAEA as a significant national milestone and a reflection of global recognition of the contributions small nations can make to international security and sustainable development.

She added that membership would enable Maldives to access technical assistance in healthcare, food security, and human resource development. The country intends to work with the agency to expand nuclear medicine and radiation therapy for cancer treatment and to acquire technological tools to support its sustainable development goals.
