Maldives Immigration today launched Operation Hamamagu in Addu City, marking the agency’s largest enforcement operation to date. The operation aims to regularise the undocumented migrant population and tackle illegal employment practices across the city.
Immigration said a total of 35 officers from the Enforcement and Compliance Division and the Addu Immigration Office are participating in the operation, which is being led by the Immigration Task Force. Officials confirmed that the sweep will cover all areas of Addu City and continue from morning until sunset.
The operation specifically targets expatriates working without valid documentation, who will be detained and transported to the immigration detention centre in Malé under official supervision. Authorities plan to repatriate those found in violation of immigration laws.
In addition, they said they will be notifying Maldivians employing undocumented immigrants as well.
The Maldives Immigration stated that this campaign is part of a nationwide strategy to address the growing issue of illegal immigration. The agency aims to extend similar operations to other regions, focusing on identifying individuals without proper authorisation.
The operation reflects the government’s renewed commitment to upholding immigration laws and ensuring the integrity of the country’s labour and residency systems.
