Maldives Immigration has announced plans to recruit an additional 150 officer trainees, following an overwhelming response to walk-in interviews held over the weekend.
The Immigration initially opened 50 vacancies for officer trainee positions and conducted interviews on Saturday, 24 May, at Galolhu School in Malé.
The event saw a significant turnout, with 875 individuals attending the interviews between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. A queue had formed early in the morning, extending for at least a block along the pavement outside the school premises.
Due to the large number of applicants, the agency increased the number of interview panels from six to nine during the course of the day. Each panel worked to process the high volume of candidates applying for the entry-level roles.
A spokesperson for Maldives Immigration confirmed on Sunday that the agency now intends to hire a total of 200 officer trainees, meaning 150 more recruits will be selected in the next round. Applications for the remaining positions will open at a later date.
The officer trainee role offers a basic monthly salary of MVR 6,500, along with a service allowance of MVR 1,500. Upon completion of basic training, recruits will also receive a special service allowance equal to 35 percent of their salary.
According to the 2022 census, the Maldives has a population of 515,132, including 411,219 individuals of working age—defined as those aged 15 years and above. The national unemployment rate currently stands at three percent.
