According to the Ministry of Economic Development, the instrument of accession was submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva on 3 November, and the Maldives’ membership will come into effect on 22 November.
With the accession, the works of Maldivian writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, and other creative professionals will receive the same level of protection as those from the 181 countries currently part of the Berne Union.
The Ministry stated that joining the convention is an important step towards building a comprehensive intellectual property framework in the Maldives and establishing collective management organisations to ensure fair compensation for creators and producers.
The initiative also supports President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s goal of increasing the contribution of the creative and digital economy sector to 15 percent of the national GDP by 2030.
