Membership in COPUOS allows the Maldives to play a role in shaping global governance of outer space, ensuring that space science and technology are applied to support sustainable development, innovation, and climate resilience. For the country, this opens opportunities to access and utilise space-derived data to enhance climate monitoring, maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness.

Alongside the Maldives, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Malta, The Gambia, and Côte d’Ivoire were also admitted as new members of COPUOS.
