The workshops, running from 1 to 6 July, are organised with technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the British Council. Participants include representatives from government ministries, relevant agencies, businesses in the creative sector, resorts, and international experts.
This initiative aims to promote dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and innovation to support inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The workshops are part of the government’s Creative Economic Strategic Action Plan 2024-2028, which seeks to maximise opportunities within the tourism industry.
The Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Dr Aishath Shahudha Abdulla, stated that the workshops will focus on overcoming obstacles to foreign market access and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. They will also provide a platform for sharing experiences and visions from various sectors of the creative economy, facilitating discussions on the steps needed to meet strategic goals.
Key areas of focus include increasing the economic viability of creative goods and services, improving business transactions, and shaping the future of the Maldives’ creative economy. The workshops also offer participants access to advice and consultation from international experts and professionals to help achieve the medium and long-term objectives of the sector.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that his administration will meet its target of raising the creative industry’s contribution to 15 per cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ahead of the original 2030 deadline. His policy aims to provide financial assistance to innovative and skilled individuals within the creative sector.
