Maldives Maritime Conference 2024 Aims to Propel Maritime Sector Development

The Maldives Maritime Conference 2024, organised by the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), was launched today at Villa Nautica. The one-day conference was inaugurated by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan.

In his address at the opening ceremony, CEO of MPL Mohammed Wajeeh Ibrahim, underscored the significance of the conference as a pivotal forum for advancing the Maldives’ maritime sector. He expressed optimism about the gathering, which brings together domestic and foreign stakeholders to address challenges, evaluate progress, and chart the course for future developments.

“This is a very important time for us. Domestic and foreign stakeholders will meet in one place to discuss the challenges facing our maritime sector, the progress of this sector and have important discussions in shaping the future of this sector,” said Ibrahim. “We are committed to developing the maritime sector in Maldives.”

Highlighting the government’s steadfast commitment to maritime sector growth and economic enhancement, Ibrahim emphasized the transformative potential of upcoming projects. 

“The relocation of the Male commercial port to Thilafushi, the planned development of the Ihavandhippolhu port facility with a trans-shipment port and the commencement of bunkering services at L.Gaadhoo are projects that will revolutionize the country (maritime sector),” he remarked.

The conference is being held in collaboration with International Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Port of Johor (Malaysia), and the Port of Valencia (Spain).
