The Maldives Medical Conference 2025 has concluded with discussions on the treatment and care of the elderly, reflecting growing concerns over the country’s ageing population.
This year’s conference was held under the theme “Geriatrics: Let’s Talk Aged Care”, focusing on the increasing importance of elderly healthcare in the Maldives and other nations experiencing similar demographic shifts. The two-day event, organised by the Maldives Medical Association, brought together doctors and healthcare professionals from across the country.

Sessions explored ways to improve the quality of care for older patients, drawing on international approaches to elderly healthcare and considering how such practices could be adapted locally. Participants also highlighted the absence of doctors in the Maldives specialising in geriatric care and discussed strategies to encourage medical students to pursue the field.
According to demographic projections, seven percent of the Maldives’ population will be aged 75 or above by 2030, with the figure expected to reach 10 percent by 2040. Within the next two decades, one in every ten Maldivians will be over the age of 65. The Medical Association emphasised the need for early preparation to meet the challenges that will arise from this demographic change.
The conference marked the second such initiative by the Maldives Medical Association, underscoring its commitment to addressing elderly healthcare as a national priority.
