Maldives Opens Applications for Second Basic Mariculture Course of the Year

The government has opened applications for the second Basic Mariculture course of the year, aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ marine aquaculture industry and supporting sustainable development in the fisheries sector.

The training programme is part of the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme and is supported by the World Bank-funded “Transforming Fisheries Sector Management in South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project.” It is organised by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources in collaboration with the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI).

The course will be held from 18 to 30 October at the Research and Training Facility in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll, and will accommodate 15 participants. The deadline for applications is 30 September.

Participants will receive training in aquaculture systems, live food cultivation, fish biology and reproduction, breeding of indigenous species, seaweed cultivation, identification and prevention of fish diseases, and environmental protection in aquaculture.

The government will cover food, accommodation, and travel expenses for those selected. The initiative is part of efforts to diversify the economy by creating new opportunities within the fisheries sector, with a focus on building skilled expertise to enhance economic growth and sustainability.
