Maldives, Pakistan Speakers Hold Talks to Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation

Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla has described the Maldivian Parliament building as a concrete symbol of the enduring relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan, during a meeting with Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly.

The meeting took place as Speaker Sadiq commenced a three-day official visit to the Maldives at the invitation of his Maldivian counterpart. Discussions highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries and explored avenues to further strengthen diplomatic and parliamentary engagement.

Speaker Abdul Raheem expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s contributions to the Maldives, noting its support in the education and health sectors, as well as direct assistance provided to the People’s Majlis. He also emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperation between the two legislatures as part of broader bilateral relations.

The visit concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at institutionalising collaboration between the Maldivian Parliament and Pakistan’s National Assembly. The agreement is intended to establish new capacity-building programmes for lawmakers and parliamentary staff, reinforcing parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
