During the two-week session, the United Nations Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group is set to review the human rights records of fourteen Member States: Armenia, Grenada, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Kenya, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Spain, Sweden, and Türkiye.

In line with the Government’s policy priorities, the Maldives delegation is actively engaging in the session and offering constructive recommendations to all States under review. The country also holds a key role as a member of the Human Rights Council, having been selected to serve in the Troika for the review of Kyrgyzstan. The Troika system consists of three States acting as rapporteurs for each review.

Leading the Maldives delegation is Dr Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva. She is joined by Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Aishath Rayahyn, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission.

The UPR is a state-led process that allows UN Member States to assess each other’s human rights records. It offers an opportunity for countries to report on progress made in fulfilling their human rights obligations, while also receiving feedback from peers. The current Fourth Cycle of the UPR began in November 2022 and is scheduled to conclude in 2027, with the Working Group convening three times a year.
