The Maldives is participating in the 50th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which commenced on Monday at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The session, organised by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group, will run until 14 November. Over the two-week period, the human rights records of fourteen States, including Andorra, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Honduras, Jamaica, Libya, Liberia, Malawi, Maldives, Mongolia, Marshall Islands, Panama, and the United States of America, will be reviewed.
The Maldives will undergo its fourth Universal Periodic Review on 5 November. This review presents an opportunity for the country to reaffirm its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights through engagement with international mechanisms. Guided by national priorities and key policy objectives, the Maldivian delegation will actively contribute to the session and offer constructive recommendations to other States under review.
The UPR Working Group convenes three sessions each year as part of a State-driven process that reviews the human rights situation in all UN Member States. The Fourth Cycle of the UPR began in November 2022 and will conclude in 2027. The mechanism allows States to report on their human rights progress while providing an opportunity for peer Member States to make recommendations for further improvement.
Each review is facilitated by a “troika” of three Member States serving as rapporteurs. The Maldives, as a member of the Human Rights Council, has been selected to serve on the Troika for Jamaica’s review during this session.
The Maldives delegation is led by Dr Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva. The delegation also includes Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Aishath Rayahyn, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission.
In addition to leading the national delegation, Dr Salma, who serves as Vice President of the Human Rights Council representing the Asia-Pacific Group, will chair meetings of the UPR session.
