Maldives Police Confiscate Mobile Phones and Electronics in Maafushi Jail

Maldives Police Service (MPS) confiscated several mobile phones and electronics from Maafushi Jail yesterday as part of an ongoing operation aimed at intercepting contraband smuggled into the prison.
In a statement, the police reported that law enforcement officers conducted raids on eight units within Maafushi Jail.
The items seized included:
- 29 mobile phones
- 17 chargers
- 12 headphones
- 3 flash drives
- 3 ear pods
- 3 cables
- 2 SIM cards
- 4 bottles of bootleg wine
The ongoing operation – ordered by Ali Ihusaan, the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology – involves 183 police officers 81 soldiers from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and 40 officers from the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS).
Ihusaan also revealed this week that an investigation has been launched into a network of 18 corrupt MCS officers implicated in smuggling contraband into the jail. According to Ihusaan, over MVR 73.6 million was deposited into the bank accounts of these officers.
