The rise in illegally parked vehicles had caused significant congestion on these major roads. To address this issue, authorities began towing and removing vehicles last month. The operation has been ongoing consistently from 12 June until 30 June, and continues today.
From Majeedhee Magu, 216 motorbikes and two cars were towed. One motorbike was towed more than once. From Boduthakurufaanu Magu, 164 motorbikes and 64 cars were removed, with one car being towed multiple times.
To reinforce the parking restrictions, cones and police tape have been placed along the roads. Certain sections have also been blocked with barricades to deter illegal parking.
Authorities have confirmed that vehicles will be released after 48 hours. Owners must pay a fine of MVR 750, along with any other outstanding fines and unpaid annual fees, before their vehicles are returned.
