Following the request by the United Nations General Assembly for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to provide an advisory opinion on state responsibilities regarding climate change, Attorney General of the Republic of Maldives Uz. Ahmed Usham presented oral submissions in the advisory proceedings entitled ‘Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change’ yesterday.

Representing the Government of the Maldives, Attorney General Usham highlighted President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership in climate change advocacy and called on the international community to support climate-vulnerable countries such as the Maldives. He further highlighted the Maldives’ vulnerability to the slow-onset impacts of climate change and stated the Maldives’ position against forced relocation due to climate change.

Additionally, international lawyers representing the Maldives emphasised the binding obligations under climate treaties and the international community’s duty to assist Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in adapting to climate impacts.

The Attorney General’s Office has reiterated its commitment to addressing the global climate crisis through international cooperation and collective action to protect vulnerable nations such as the Maldives.
